number 6 of only 20 hors commerce copies signed by matisse on the colophon; from a total edition of 270. Here Matisse illustrated the poems of the 17th-century nun Marianna Alcaforado to a French Officer with whom she fell in love and suffered an unrequited romance. This was Matisse's first collaboration with the great art publisher Tériade. It shows his mastery of draughtsmanship and displays a subtlety of line and form which beautifully portray Marianna's tormented longing and frailty. The Artist and the Book 199; Barr 560.
